چکیده
?Induction and Patterning of the Primitive Streak, an Organizing Center of Gastrulation in the Amniote,? (hereafter referred to as ?Induction?) examines the mechanisms underlying early amniote gastrulation [7] and the formation of the primitive streak [8] and midline axis. The review, authored by Takashi Mikawa and colleagues at Cornell University [9] Medical College, was published in Developmental Dynamics in 2004. The article primarily discusses chick [10] embryos as a model organism [11] for nonrodent amniote gastrulation [7], although it intermittently touches on nonamniote gastrulation [7] for comparative purposes. ?Induction? attempts to explain the initiation of cell differentiation [12] and embryo organization [13], one of the most intriguing processes of embryology [14].

Induction and patterning of the primitive streak, an organizing center of gastrulation in the amniote.
The primitive streak is the organizing center for amniote gastrulation. It defines the future embryonic midline and serves as a conduit of cell migration for germ layer formation. The migration patterns of endodermal and mesodermal precursors through the streak have been studied in great detail. Additional new breakthroughs recently have revealed the cell biological and molecular mechanisms tha...
متن کاملGastrulation in the amniote begins with the formation of a primitive streak through which precursors of definitive mesoderm and endoderm ingress and migrate to their embryonic destinations. This organizing center for amniote gastrulation
Gastrulation is the morphogenetic event through which the three definitive germ layers, ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm, are established. Coordinated behaviors of embryonic cells during gastrulation have been carefully studied in non-amniotes, particularly frog embryos (reviewed in Keller, 1986). In the frog, animal hemisphere blastomeres involute through the dorsal blastopore lip, undergo conv...

متن کاملThe Wnt co-receptors Lrp5 and Lrp6 are essential for gastrulation in mice.
Recent work has identified LDL receptor-related family members, Lrp5 and Lrp6, as co-receptors for the transduction of Wnt signals. Our analysis of mice carrying mutations in both Lrp5 and Lrp6 demonstrates that the functions of these genes are redundant and are essential for gastrulation. Lrp5;Lrp6 double homozygous mutants fail to establish a primitive streak, although the anterior visceral e...

Formation of the primitive streak, the equivalent of the blastopore, is a critical step during the early development of amniote embryos. Medio-lateral cell intercalation and the planar cell polarity pathway play a role during this earliest step of gastrulation in the chick embryo.
